The compact grid of streets around Calle Larios, the Cathedral and Plaza de la Constitución is where most of Málaga's big cultural moments happen. Because everything sits within a 10-minute walk, you can build a whole trip around a single festival and still see the museums, tapas bars and the port. Use the calendar below to time your visit, and check the practical notes so you arrive at the right square at the right hour.
Málaga Film Festival (early March)
The Festival de Málaga is Spain's leading showcase for Spanish-language cinema, with red carpets, premieres, industry talks and open-air screenings that take over the old town. The 29th edition runs from 6 to 15 March 2026, preceded by MaF (Málaga de Festival), a wider cultural programme of exhibitions, concerts and film events held from 12 February to 5 March 2026. The heart of the festival is Teatro Cervantes and the nearby Cine Albéniz, both in the historic center.
Holy Week / Semana Santa (late March–early April 2026)
Semana Santa is Málaga's most intense cultural week. Elaborate thrones (some carried by hundreds of bearers) leave from churches across the old town and wind through the center in daily processions. In 2026 it runs from Palm Sunday, 29 March, to Easter Sunday, 5 April. The first procession, La Pollinica, sets out on Palm Sunday from the Church of San Agustín at around 09:50. Emblematic brotherhoods to look for include El Cautivo (Holy Monday), El Rico and La Expiración (Holy Wednesday), and Cristo de Mena and La Esperanza (Holy Thursday).
La Noche en Blanco (Saturday 16 May 2026)
For one night, Málaga's museums and cultural spaces stay open late with free admission and special programming. The 2026 edition falls on Saturday 16 May, running from 20:00 to 01:00 under the theme "El futuro se escribe con música" ("The future is written in music"), with around 150 activities across roughly 98 venues. Free late entry is expected at major institutions including the Picasso Museum, Carmen Thyssen Museum, Centre Pompidou Málaga, the Museo de Málaga and CAC Málaga.

Feria de Málaga (15–22 August 2026)
The August fair is the city's biggest party, split into two very different halves. The daytime fair (feria de día) fills the historic center, Calle Larios and Plaza de la Constitución, with flamenco dresses, verdiales folk music, sweet Málaga wine and packed tapas bars; the evening fair moves out to the Cortijo de Torres fairground. The 2026 edition runs from Saturday 15 to Saturday 22 August, with the traditional opening fireworks and light show over La Malagueta beach and the port around midnight on Friday 14 August.
Málaga International Jazz Festival (November)
Each November, Teatro Cervantes hosts one of Spain's most respected jazz festivals, with international headliners indoors and free outdoor concerts in the city's squares. As a reference, the 39th edition ran from 3 to 10 November 2025 with tickets from about €10 to €54 depending on the artist and seat. Expect the 2026 edition around the same early-November window; confirm exact dates and line-up on the Teatro Cervantes website closer to autumn.
Christmas and the Calle Larios Light Show (late November–early January)
Málaga's Christmas lights have become a headline event in their own right. On Calle Larios, a sound-and-light show set to music runs several times each evening, drawing big crowds beneath the illuminated canopy, while Christmas markets and nativity scenes appear across the old town. In the 2025–26 season the display ran from 28 November 2025 to 5 January 2026, with shows at 18:30, 20:30 and 22:00 (no shows on 24 or 31 December). Expect a similar pattern for the next festive season.
Getting to the historic center
Nearly every event above happens within walking distance of Calle Larios and the Cathedral, so you rarely need transport once you arrive downtown. From the airport, the Renfe Cercanías C1 train is the fastest and cheapest option: it reaches the very central Málaga Centro-Alameda station in about 12 minutes, runs roughly every 20 minutes, and costs around €1.80–€1.85 one way. From Centro-Alameda it is a 5-minute walk to Plaza de la Constitución.
