Málaga rewards travelers who look past the beach. Within a ten-minute walk of the Cathedral you'll find a Picasso collection in the painter's home city, a French national museum on the waterfront, and a nineteenth-century Andalusian art gallery, all wrapped in Roman, Moorish, and Renaissance streets. Below you'll find what's worth your time in every season, plus the practical numbers that let you skip queues and pay less.
Museums Open All Year
Four museums anchor the old town, and all sit within easy walking distance of each other. If you plan to visit more than one, go on a Sunday afternoon: two of them drop their admission to free in the final hours.
Museo Picasso Málaga is the natural starting point. Housed in the 16th-century Palacio de Buenavista, it holds a permanent collection spanning the artist's whole career, alongside rotating temporary exhibitions. It's a five-minute walk from the Cathedral.
- Address: Palacio de Buenavista, Calle San Agustín 8, 29015 Málaga
- Opening hours: open every day, 10:00–20:00
- Tip: buy timed tickets online in advance during Easter and summer, when the entrance queue builds
Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga, set in a restored 16th-century palace on Plaza Carmen Thyssen, focuses on 19th-century Spanish and Andalusian painting. It's one of the best-value stops in the city, and free on Sunday afternoons.
- Address: Plaza Carmen Thyssen (C/ Compañía 10), 29008 Málaga
- Hours: Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–20:00; closed Monday (last admission 30 minutes before closing)

- Combined ticket with the archaeological site beneath the museum: €15
Centre Pompidou Málaga brings modern and contemporary art to the harbor, inside the colorful glass cube known as 'El Cubo' on Muelle Uno. It's a scenic 10–15 minute walk along the port from the historic core, and the only major museum here closed on Tuesdays rather than Mondays.
- Address: Pasaje Doctor Carrillo Casaux s/n, Muelle Uno, Puerto de Málaga, 29016
- Hours: Monday and Wednesday–Sunday 9:30–20:00; closed Tuesday (last admission 30 minutes before closing)
- Prices: combined ticket €9 (reduced €5.50); permanent collection only €7 (€4 reduced)
- Free entry: under-18s, and everyone on Sundays from 16:00 onward
Museo de Málaga rounds out the group, combining a fine-arts collection with the city's archaeology under one roof in the vast Palacio de la Aduana, next to the Alcazaba and the port. It's a state-run museum, so check its official page for current hours and admission before you go.
Seasonal Cultural Highlights
Complete Malaga old town walking tour with admission tickets includedCheck availability →The old town's calendar shifts with the season, and timing your trip around one event can define the whole visit. These are the fixtures worth planning around.
- Winter: the Three Kings Parade (Cabalgata de Reyes) rolls through the center on the evening of 5 January, showering crowds with sweets; Christmas concerts fill the Cathedral and squares through late December and early January
- Spring: the Málaga Film Festival (Festival de Málaga) returns for its 30th edition on 6–15 March 2026, turning Calle Larios and Teatro Cervantes into a red carpet
- Spring: Holy Week (Semana Santa) runs 29 March–5 April in 2026, with nightly processions of towering thrones through the historic streets
- Summer: open-air concerts and theatre take over the plazas and the Alcazaba on warm evenings; the 'Noche en Blanco' cultural night typically falls on a Saturday in mid-May, with museums and venues open late and free
- Autumn: the Málaga International Jazz Festival brings a week of concerts (usually November), and European Heritage Days open normally closed historic buildings for free
Theatre, Music, and Dance in Historic Venues
For an evening indoors, the center's two flagship stages sit steps apart near Plaza de la Merced. Teatro Cervantes, opened in 1870, hosts opera, ballet, flamenco, and orchestral concerts under a painted ceiling; its smaller sibling, Teatro Echegaray, leans toward contemporary drama and intimate recitals. Programs run year-round, so check what's on the night you're in town, and book flamenco and headline concerts ahead, as they sell out.
Local Culture in Public Squares
You don't need a ticket to feel Málaga's culture. Three squares carry the everyday life of the old town, and they're all within a few minutes' walk of one another.
- Plaza de la Constitución: the city's main square and the pedestrian hub off Calle Larios, home to seasonal markets and festival stages
- Plaza del Obispo: the postcard view of the Cathedral façade, and a favorite for outdoor concerts
- Plaza de la Merced: Picasso's birthplace faces this leafy square, which fills with buskers, storytellers, and café terraces
Guided Cultural Routes Through the Old Town
The center is small enough to see on foot, but a guided route ties the layers together, from the Roman theatre at the foot of the Alcazaba to the Moorish fortress above it and the Renaissance Cathedral below. Walking tours in English run daily and typically last two to three hours; morning slots are best in summer, before the midday heat.
Getting There and Around
The historic center is compact and almost entirely pedestrian, so once you arrive you'll walk everywhere. Getting into it is easy from any arrival point.
- From the airport: the C-1 Cercanías train runs to María Zambrano and Málaga-Centro Alameda stations in about 12 minutes; the A Express bus goes to the Alameda
- By train: high-speed and regional services arrive at María Zambrano, a 10–15 minute walk (or short bus ride) from the Cathedral and museums
- On foot: the four main museums, the Cathedral, and the Alcazaba are all within a 10-minute walk of each other, so a single day on foot covers the core
Málaga's Culture for Every Traveler
Whether you have a single afternoon or a long weekend, the historic center delivers culture without a car and without long transfers. Pair one or two museums with a walk through the squares and an evening at Teatro Cervantes, and time your visit to a Sunday afternoon or a festival week to get the most for the least.
