Málaga has a compact historic centre where almost everything is within a ten or fifteen minute walk. With a well-planned day you'll have time to see the essentials: the Moorish heritage, the Cathedral, a couple of top-tier museums and sunset by the harbour. This is the order that works best to make the most of the light, avoid queues and dodge the hottest hours.
How to plan the day before you set off
The key is to start early. Begin between 9:00 and 10:00: at that time the monuments open with fewer crowds and the sun isn't too strong yet, which you'll appreciate especially between June and September. Book the Alcazaba and the museums in advance if you're travelling in high season; the time you save at the ticket office is real.

Locals call it 'La Manquita' because it's missing one of the two towers originally planned: stop and look at it for a moment before going in and you'll see why.

Alcazaba and Roman Theatre
A few metres away, next to calle Alcazabilla, two gems sit side by side: the Roman Theatre, dating from the 1st century, whose site can be visited free of charge, and above it the Alcazaba, the best-preserved Moorish palace-fortress in Spain. Wander through its courtyards, arches and gardens up to the high viewpoints, which offer some of the best views over the harbour and the city.
The Alcazaba offers a reduced rate to certain groups and is free to enter on Sundays from a fixed time in the afternoon; if your visit falls on a Sunday, plan around it. Confirm the day's opening hours and conditions on the official website before you go.
