The Cathedral of the Incarnation sits in the heart of Málaga's old town and works as a living center of religious, musical and cultural life, not just a sightseeing stop. If you time your visit right, you can hear its historic pipe organ, attend a major liturgical celebration or watch Holy Week processions gather beneath its walls. Here is what happens inside the cathedral through the year and how to experience it.
Organ Concerts and Sacred Music
The cathedral's two monumental 18th-century organs and its extraordinary acoustics make it one of the finest concert spaces in Andalusia. The highlight of the musical calendar is the Ciclo de Conciertos de Órgano 'Catedral de Málaga', an international organ series sponsored by Fundación Unicaja that has run for more than 30 editions.
- When: the series traditionally takes place on consecutive Wednesday evenings in late spring. The 2026 edition ran on 20 and 27 May and 3, 10 and 17 June.
- Time: concerts begin at 19:30 (7:30 pm).
- Price: admission is free, with open entry until the cathedral reaches capacity, so arrive early.
- Who plays: each edition brings organists from across Europe, with recent programs featuring performers from Germany, Belgium, Slovakia, Italy and Portugal.
Beyond the organ series, the cathedral hosts Christmas choral concerts and sacred-music performances during Holy Week. Many of these are free or modestly priced.
Major Liturgical Celebrations
Complete Malaga old town walking tour with admission tickets includedCheck availability →The great feasts of the Catholic calendar are marked here with particular solemnity, and the main Masses are open to the public free of charge. The most significant include:
- Feast of the Incarnation (25 March): the cathedral's patronal feast, honoring the Annunciation to which the building is dedicated.
- Christmas Eve Midnight Mass ('Misa del Gallo') on 24 December.
- Holy Week services, including the Easter Triduum from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday.
- Corpus Christi, celebrated with a solemn Mass and procession in late spring.
Holy Week (Semana Santa)
Holy Week is Málaga's most important religious and cultural event, and the cathedral is at its heart. Many of the city's brotherhoods pass the cathedral on their official route, which typically threads through Calle Larios and the Alameda, and the building serves as a reference point and gathering place for the great processions. Expect huge crowds, altered visiting hours and an intense, deeply local atmosphere.
- In 2027, Palm Sunday falls on 21 March, Holy Thursday on 25 March, Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Sunday on 28 March.
- Dates change every year because Easter is a movable feast, so confirm the exact calendar before booking travel.
- During Semana Santa the cathedral's tourist opening hours shift significantly; check the official website close to your visit.
Weddings, Baptisms and Private Ceremonies
The cathedral remains an active parish, and religious weddings, baptisms and First Communions take place regularly. These are private ceremonies, not tourist events, and they require months of advance arrangement through the diocese along with adherence to church requirements. If you happen upon one, keep a respectful distance.
Cultural Events and Exhibitions
The cathedral and the Diocese of Málaga occasionally stage sacred-art exhibitions and temporary cultural programs, sometimes pairing the historic setting with contemporary installations. These are irregular, so the reliable way to find them is the Diocese of Málaga website or the notices posted at the cathedral entrance.
