You do not have to go far from Málaga to trade the beach for real mountains. Within about an hour you can walk a suspended gorge boardwalk, wade up a cool river in the middle of summer, or lose yourself in a maze of surreal rock. This guide covers six routes sorted by difficulty, with verified distances, opening hours, prices and directions so you can plan the day instead of improvising it.
El Torcal de Antequera — surreal rock, easy walking
El Torcal is the easiest big-wow hike near Málaga: a karst landscape of stacked, wind-sculpted limestone about an hour's drive north. Two waymarked loops start right at the Torcal Alto visitor centre. The Green Route (Ruta Verde) is 1.5 km and takes roughly 45 minutes; the Yellow Route (Ruta Amarilla) extends it to about 3 km and around an hour, with a bit more up and down. Both are circular, so you cannot get lost.
- Difficulty: easy (Green) to moderate (Yellow)
- Distance: 1.5 km / 3 km circular loops
- Entry: free — both the park and the Torcal Alto visitor centre
- Visitor centre hours: 10:00–19:00 (April–October), 10:00–17:00 (November–March); closed 25 Dec, 1 & 6 Jan
Caminito del Rey — the famous gorge boardwalk
Guided bus tour: El Caminito del Rey Hiking RouteCheck availability →The Caminito del Rey is the trail everyone comes for: a walkway pinned to the walls of the El Chorro gorge, high above the river. It is physically easy and one-directional (north to south), but it is not for anyone who genuinely fears heights. It is also the one trail here you cannot just turn up for — access is timed and capacity is capped, so booking ahead is essential.
- Difficulty: easy underfoot, exposed and high
- Standard ticket: €10; guided ticket with official guide: €18
- Opening hours: 08:30–17:00; winter hours (from late October) 09:00–16:00
- Book only through the official site caminitodelrey.info
El Saltillo — a hanging bridge over the ravine
Less famous than the Caminito but every bit as photogenic, El Saltillo sits above the village of Canillas de Aceituno, about 1.5 hours from Málaga. The highlight is a long suspension bridge (one of Spain's longest, around 50 metres) strung across the ravine that separates Canillas de Aceituno from Sedella. It is part of the Gran Senda de Málaga long-distance network.
- Difficulty: moderate to hard
- Distance: about 8 km round trip, roughly 3 hours; a longer full version runs near 15 km
- Little shade on parts of the route — carry water and a hat
- You can turn back to Canillas or push on toward Sedella (experienced hikers only)
Río Chillar — a wet hike for hot days
The Río Chillar near Nerja is the classic summer answer to Andalusian heat: instead of walking beside a river, you walk up it, ankle- to knee-deep, through a narrowing gorge. The lower section is easy and great for families; the full route to Vado de los Patos is long. Expect to get your feet wet the whole way, so wear trainers or sandals you do not mind soaking.
- Difficulty: easy (lower section) to long full route
- Full route to Vado de los Patos: about 8 km each way — a 16 km round trip, roughly 6–7 hours with stops
- Trailhead is about a 30-minute walk from Nerja old town
- Free hiker parking at Calle Mirto (about 15 min walk to the entrance) or the Almijara market car park
Montes de Málaga — green hills on the city's doorstep
If you want a real walk without leaving the city's edge, the Montes de Málaga Natural Park sits just north of town, cloaked in pine and holm oak that were replanted to protect Málaga from flooding. Trails here are gentle, well shaded and dotted with picnic spots. The Sendero de Pocopán is the pick: a 5.6 km loop of about 1 hour 40 minutes that climbs to a viewpoint over the hills and the Frailes stream.
- Difficulty: easy to moderate
- Pocopán loop: 5.6 km circular, around 1 h 40 min
- Trailhead: Aula de Naturaleza Las Contadoras / Contadoras esplanade car park
- Good all-rounder for families and a half-day out
La Maroma — the province's rooftop
La Maroma, at 2,069 metres, is the highest peak in Málaga province and a serious full-day mission for fit, experienced hikers only. The classic circuit from Sedella starts at around 650 metres, so you climb the best part of 1,600 vertical metres to the summit — long, exposed and demanding. In return you get views that stretch from the Sierra Nevada to the Mediterranean on a clear day.
- Difficulty: hard — experienced hikers only
- Summit: 2,069 m, highest in the province
- Classic Sedella circuit: roughly 21 km with about 1,580 m of ascent
- Duration: plan for a full day, around 9–11 hours
Before you set off
Most of these trails need a car or a train-plus-shuttle combination, and hiking is possible year-round if you adjust to the season. In summer, walk early and skip the exposed peaks in the midday sun; the river and shaded forest routes are the smart hot-weather choices.
- Carry more water than you expect to drink, especially on La Maroma and El Saltillo
- Wear proper footwear — grippy shoes for rock, quick-drying trainers for the Río Chillar
- Sunscreen, hat and a wind layer for exposed high ground
- Check the weather the morning of, and start early to beat both heat and crowds
- Book the Caminito del Rey well in advance — it is the one route you cannot improvise
